About
Take Your Step was born from a reflection on freedom within connection: the possibility of caring deeply about another person without trying to determine where the relationship must lead.
It explores the difference between what is real now and the futures we imagine around it. Wanting, hoping and wondering can all exist without turning tomorrow into a condition for what we feel today.
At its center is a simple image: two people taking their own steps, freely. They may move closer, change direction or continue together. Neither has to control the other’s movement for what exists between them to be meaningful.
“Take your step. I’ll take mine.”
Lyrics
I used to hold tomorrow
like water in my hands,
afraid that if I let it fall
I’d lose what hadn’t happened yet.
I listened for your footsteps,
I watched which way you’d turn,
trying to keep a future
that wasn’t mine to earn.
Then I opened up my hands.
Nothing disappeared.
You were still you.
I was still here.
And everything that happened
was still real.
Take your step.
I’ll take mine.
Take your step.
I’ll take mine.
I don’t need your next move
to know the truth of mine.
Dance.
Come closer if you want to.
Turn away if you need.
I won’t pull upon the flower
just to make it bloom for me.
You don’t have to be
the future I once saw.
I’d rather meet you as you are
than love you as a thought.
And if the truth should hurt me,
let the truth come through.
I would rather lose illusion
than lose the sight of you.
So dance with me
because you’re free.
Not because tomorrow
needs you here with me.
I have oceans left inside me,
I have skies I’ve never known.
I can love what grows between us
without calling it my own.
This is abundance.
Not holding.
Not knowing.
Still open.
Still growing.
Still open…
Still growing…
Still here…
Still free…
I buried futures in my body,
wore tomorrow like a chain.
Loved the ghosts of things not happened,
then called their absence pain.
But what was real
is still real.
It doesn’t need to stay.
You don’t owe me your tomorrow
to make true what lived today.
And I can want you.
I can miss you.
I can wonder where this goes.
I can hope that something blossoms.
And still…
not know.
I don’t know.
I don’t know.
I don’t need to know.
DANCE!
Take your step!
I’ll take mine!
Take your step!
I’ll take mine!
I don’t need your next move
to know the truth of mine.
If you come —
I’ll meet you there.
If you stay —
then stay because you care.
If we grow —
we grow alive.
Your freedom
standing next to mine.
There is more!
There is more!
THERE IS MORE!
Not because
I need you less.
Because life is more.
More love.
More life.
More roads
I haven’t walked.
More sky.
More time.
More truth
I haven’t found.
Take your step.
I’ll take mine.
Take your step.
I’ll take mine.
What is real
doesn’t need tomorrow
to make it true.
And what has not happened…
I can leave
unknown.
